La Pieta (Italian for pity) may be one of the most famous sculptures made by Michelangelo (1499) and certainly one of my favorites to think about during this time of Lent. The beauty of its lines and forms with the expressive gestures and thoughtfulness leave a lasting impression. It is no wonder that this tender view of human suffering can convey such a feeling of peace and tranquil thoughts for me. Michelangelo was criticized for portraying Mary so youthful, but this gives her a very innocent, serene look, accepting her sorrow with great faith. This beautiful sculpture restores my spirit. Ave Maria.
